TLDR:
This blog now lives at afoxinweb3.tokenpage.xyz, I hope this will drive more visibility to our company tokenpage.xyz.
Token Page began through EthGlobal hackathons where we created our first product in the Web3 space milliondollartokenpage.com.
We’ve since worked as development consultants on several projects including with Creepz/Overlord, Seedphrase, and Trym Ruud’s Rude Boys.
Plus we tried our hand at a few other products that unfortunately didn’t work out, like our Gallery for NFT projects and Studio for Web3 Artists.
We’re still working as development consultants but working towards building a scalable Web3 product, the latest idea being Web3 enabled loyalty for ecom stores.
I’ve moved my blog from afoxinweb3.substack.com to the subdomain afoxinweb3.tokenpage.xyz.
I hope this will drive more visibility to our company website tokenpage.xyz, plus to our services and both past and future products.
With this change I also thought I would talk a bit this week about Token Page, our past, present, and where we want to be in the future.
Token Page
My blog is moving from afoxinweb3.substack.com to afoxinweb3.tokenpage.xyz. I hope this will drive more SEO and attention in general over to tokenpage.xyz, which is my company’s primary website.
Token Page is a company created by myself and my cofounder Krishan Patel. We’ve been friends for over a decade since we studied at university together and in 2021 we started actively building together in Web3.
In the past few years we’ve worked with lots of different people and projects including Creepz/Overlord, Seedphrase, and most recently ZenAcademy with the release of my free course in partnership with them.
Token Page offers consulting services building software products in Web3 for both small one-man bands and bigger teams alike. Our favourite type of work is when we help a team go from 0 to 1, building the MVP (minimum viable product) for a new idea.
For example we built SwapShop with Seedphrase helping him and his team to go from concept to product. In their own words we “got SwapShop from just an idea to high-quality launchable product within a few weeks.”
If anyone reading this post has any ideas product ideas they want to build out in Web3 or knows anyone else who might want to then we can certainly help you out. I’m happy to even just jump on a call to get to know you and just to brainstorm.
But we didn’t start with consulting and that’s not necessarily where we want to Token Page to go in the future either.
Milliondollartokenpage.com
Before Token Page existed, our first project was an EthGlobal hackathon called milliondollartokenpage.com (MDTP) that we kept developing between hackathons further and further until we released it in September 2021.
We took the milliondollarhomepage.com concept and recreated it for Web3. The original website was built in 2005 and the concept centred around selling 1 million pixels for $1 each such that buyers could put up whatever advert they wanted and it would be saved on the website for eternity.
With MDTP instead of you just buying a pixel on the page from a centralised service, you could now mint a section of the page as an NFT, and upload and reupload whatever content you want to it, then resell it as an NFT later on the open market.
We first released it on Product Hunt and got a bit of attention, with comments even from the likes of Ryan Hoover who created PH itself.
We also had a few press articles written about the project on release to garner some attention, such as this one on Crypto News. We saw some NFT sales at the start and carried on with it for a while.
However, sales eventually reached a stand still and the website never really took off. Nonetheless we still keep it up and running as we do believe strongly in the concept and would love to see it take off at some point and implement the many features we had in mind for it.
Consulting
Considering we’re confident builders, we decided to focus on our strengths and work with strong teams to help bring their vision to life. We took the name “Million Dollar Token Page”, dropped the first two words, and kept just the two last for our new company Token Page.
Then during the bull market we employed our services as devs and ended up working on several different NFT projects. The most well known of these was Creepz that we helped on the first generation website and NFTs before they built out their own team.
Sprite Club was another NFT project that was quite exciting with its innovative take on minting where we built an entire minting experience that affected the NFT you got. However, unfortunately that team got into an internal feud and split ways.
We worked on several other projects including Solana NFT mints, although we quickly found a preference for Solidity and EVM based projects.
Trym Ruud with his Rude Boys was a particularly interesting project. Trym created these little loveable 3D virtual toys and sold them as NFTs. We helped give the Rude Boys a website and a pretty unique gallery to call home.
Of course since the bull run ended we’ve also worked on other great products like Swapshop by Seedphrase that was released earlier this year for Wolf Game. Plus we continue to work on other interesting projects as they come and have never really stopped on this front.
Failed Products
Although we’ve consulted as devs on lots of projects over the past couple of years our goal has always really been to create and grow our own product.
Working on Sprite Club and later Rude Boys we saw the opportunity to create an NFT project page where the project would be in control and holders could view and interact with their NFTs without having to go to marketplaces like Opensea and Blur.
Gallery
We created what we called the Gallery with a view to turn int into a full “Hub” for NFT projects to run their entire project through. Instead of just having a basic landing page and Opensea profile, we imagined each NFT project would have their own personal marketplace where they could control royalties and sales, and drive richer interactions with their community than just trading.
With Sprite Club we gave holders the ability to rename their Sprites and give them some backstory. Plus In order to seed the idea into the market we created galleries for a few major projects out there like Goblin Town and Creepz.
However, this idea quite simply didn’t get any traction, and after multiple conversations with NFT projects it became clear that it wasn’t going to work out, so we moved on from the Gallery.
Then earlier this year in 2023 after interviewing several Web3 artists I found that there was the potential for a new product that we dubbed Studio.
Studio
We found that top Web3 artists were beholden to the platforms like Superare and their % cut on sales. Unlike NFT projects who often had their own devs, Web3 artists do not necessarily have devs with them and are unable to really control their own destiny - Studio would therefore empower them to be their own platform.
We got a really strong artist onboard with our vision in Sarah Zucker, who I can’t speak more highly about in both her artistic and business acumen. We worked together weekly on the concept and on getting more artists onboard.
Unfortunately though we found that the appetite for this idea was simply not there as we were deep in bear market and artists weren’t even sure when their next sale would come. As we couldn’t get enough artists onboard for Studio to be a profitable venture we ended up parting ways with Sarah and halting the project.
This was a really painful process because we were really far ahead when we decided to stop. Nonetheless, it was probably much smarter to stop building before we went down the path of creating something that would not be profitable and make us bankrupt the company.
We’ve learned through many years in business that it’s best to only build something when you know people will pay for it. So we went back to the drawing board and began thinking up new ideas for a different audiences leveraging Web3 technology.
Future
While we keep working on different consulting contracts our real goal is to build a scalable product and become a product company.
So I’ve been thinking of new markets we can target using the powerful building blocks from Web3 tech. And inspired by the movements from certain projects like Pudgy Penguins going into ecommerce and retail commerce, I began looking at how NFTs could potentially be used for ecommerce too.
Collecty
In the last few months I sketched up a new idea that I’ve been calling Collecty for now, which is essentially a Web3 enabled loyalty product for ecommerce stores. Loyalty is already a huge market worth billions of dollars focused on solving growth, retention and increasing life-time-value for ecommerce stores.
However, all solutions today (like Smile.io and LoyaltyLion.com) make use of centralised services where if you disconnect from their service then all the loyalty points and rewards disappear. If these points and rewards are instead stored on a blockchain as tokens and NFTs then a world of new possibilities can emerge.
In fact when you think more deeply about most NFT projects they tend to use NFTs to create a sense of ownership and belonging to the brand, which is very much what loyalty programs are all about!
I’ve been trying cold email and facebook ads without much success so far. The real challenge has been communicating with ecommerce store owners since I don’t have a background in this market. We will not build anything until we have validation that the market genuinely wants something like this.
If you happen to be an ecom store owner or know one then please let me know!
If this idea does not work out, we’ll move onto another idea and keep trying and building from our learnings from each idea onto the next until one of them does!
Thanks for reading about our story so far. I hope this post has given a good overview of Token Page, of how we came to be and where we want to go.
We’re still consulting and have some interesting projects on the go so reach out to me if you want to have anything built in Web3. Or if you just want to learn more about NFT Tech then why not sign up to the free course that just came out in partnership with ZenAcademy at 30daysofnfttech.com!
Otherwise keep following this blog at it’s new home afoxinweb3.tokenpage.xyz as I'll keep providing free knowledge about Web3 tech as I have always done!
