TLDR:
Gas Buddy is a simple browser extension we created to keep track of Ethereum’s gas and currency prices.
It’s super simple to download and use, just follow the information below. Give it a go and let us know if you have any feedback on how it can be improved!
In last week’s post I looked at Zen Swap, an NFT swapping app that we built for Zen Academy.
Continuing with apps we’ve built, this week I wanted to look at a tiny little extension we made in the past that you may find useful called “Gas Buddy”.
Gas Buddy
The Ethereum mainnet is pretty expensive to use as we all know. The currency is expensive and the network’s gas prices are always fluctuating. At times you may pay $5 for a transaction and at others you may pay $50 for the same one!
Layer-2’s have alleviated this problem as a lot of transaction volume is now happening on them, and L2s like Base will cost you as little as $0.10 for a typical transaction.
However, there are still times you want to transact on Ethereum mainnet, and for that you ideally want to know when gas prices are at their lowest. With this in mind we created a little extension called “Gas Buddy” that’s perfect for this.
Gas Buddy was actually created early last year before L2s were quite so popular, but I’ve found that I still use it even to this day, so I thought I’d share more about it today.
Download
Gas Buddy is super easy to get started with. You can download the extension directly from the Chrome Store and get started immediately.
We also have a self-explanatory landing page we built for it ages ago live here: www.tokenpage.xyz/gas-buddy, although I’ll explain how it works below.
Once downloaded it’ll immediately appear in your browser and become active.
Usage
Gas Buddy is incredibly simple to use. The extension’s icon will appear next to the other exenstions in your browser and when clicked it’ll pop out the following dialog box.
This dialog box then shows the following information:
⛽️ - Normal Transaction cost in gwei
⚡️ - Fast Transaction cost in gwei
$- Ethereum price in USD.
So it’s really that simple, with Gas Buddy you’ll always have the gas prices a single click away!
This information is most useful when you want to use Ethereum, so as long as you leave “Show on connected pages” turned on it’ll also appear at the bottom-right of any site you have you’re wallet connected to. Below’s an example with the Uniswap app:
Here you can see that you have the same information as above floating in a little box in the bottom-right of the screen!
Give us Feedback
Gas Buddy is a tiny little app that we made a long time ago, but the fact I’ve used it for such a long time makes me believe it may be useful for others.
Currently it’s only on Ethereum mainnet, we never expanded it further because we never saw any real uptake, yet we also never did much marketing for it. If we were to see more uptake at some point we could certainly expand it further such as to other L1s and L2s.
We’ve actually added a feedback button directly onto the main view.
So if you give it a go, like it, and have any feedback, then send it through as we would be happy to build on Gas Buddy further if we see enough usage and positive feedback.
