TLDR:
AI Agents are a fast growing sector in crypto. They are a big use-case for AI where an AI bot acts autonomously to solve a set of goals or tasks.
Virtuals is an AI Agent creation tool that adds fuel to the fire by allowing people to launch tokens for their agents. It’s a cross between pump.fun and AI Agents.
The crypto space has gone crazy for AI agents in the past couple of months, with a few of the largest being Truth Terminal, aixbt, VaderAI, Luna and Zerebro.
Below we look through these different agents and focus specifically on buying the tokens for Virtuals’ agents, although there are other growing agent tools too.
We’ve just stepped into 2025! Last year was a great year for the crypto space and right now it’s looking like we’re going to have an even better year ahead as crypto-summer has well and truly started.
The crypto market is an attention driven space, and in the past few weeks a lot of the attention has shifted over to AI Agents with the Virtuals ecosystem getting a lot of eyeballs and their tokens balooning in price.
So today I wanted to take a look at Virtuals and discuss AI Agents, a topic that I’ve been meaning to write about for a few weeks now.

AI Agents
ChatGPT revolutionised AI when it stepped into the scene just a little over 2 years ago in late 2022. Since then we’ve seen a huge boom in AI, with hundreds of new AI companies appearing and everyone scrambling to figure out how to make use of it.
Within this plethora of different AI use-cases, one of the biggest use-cases that’s emerged are AI agents, in other words autonomous AI bots that can be given a task or set of goals and go out on their own to solve them.
One particularly interesting AI agent that emerged in the crypto space is called “Truth Terminal” (TT). It was built by a developer called Andy Ayrey who made a project he called infinite backrooms where a bunch of AIs, trained on content that reflects Internet culture, communicate with each other non-stop.
TT in particular was trained to be more foul mouthed than most and given the ability to post on Twitter/X. This caught the attention of silicon-valley billionaire Marc Andressen who gave TT a $50k crypto “grant” to experiment, and as soon as TT was given a crypto address by Andy things began to get even crazier.
TT got obsessed with a really dark internet meme called “goatse”, and urged the creation of a memecoin called $GOAT that ended up being sent to its crypto address. People caught onto this memecoin and soon enough everyone was buying it and the price shot up making TT the first AI multi-millionaire!
This set off a whole new wave of attention on AI agents in crypto. In the Solana ecosystem a token was launched called ai16z around an AI agent creation framework called ElizaOS, which as of today already has numerous AI Agents being created with it, and the ai16z token has grown to be worth over $2.5bn!
Meanwhile in the Base ecosystem we got the growth of Virtuals, a platform that was born earlier this year and allows people to make their own AI Agents. Virtuals takes things one step further by allowing you to launch a token alongside your agent, and that’s what’s added the rocket-fuel to this whole movement.
Virtuals
The Virtuals project began in 2021 as PathDAO but rebranded and re-released earlier this year as an AI Agent platform, and made huge headwinds after TT! In no time at all it’s own coin $VIRTUAL has already become one of the top 40 largest coins in the space according to coinmarketcap.com with a valuation of around $4.5bn!
As I said above, Virtuals essentially allows you to create your own AI agent and launch a token along with it. It’s a bit like a cross between pump.fun and AI agents! Owning a certain amount of the agent’s tokens then allows you to access certain features that the team behind the agent can set.
For example there’s an AI agent called Luna who has a permanent livestream running of her Youtube and you can spend $LUNA tokens to make her do different things like change clothes or dance.
Within Virtuals there have already been thousands of AI agents created doing all sorts of things. The market-capitalisation of some of these agents is truly astounding with the top 40 or so all having over $10m valuations! The largest of these being “aixbt” who already has an incredibly large valuation of over $500m!
Aixbt
Aixbt’s high market cap is a reflection of how impressive this AI agent truly is. It was created in November 2024 yet it already has over 270k followers on Twitter/X, having become one of the most prolific influencers in crypto in just a couple of months, as it makes 100s of posts per day that are genuinely interesting to keep up with.
You can message aixbt on X and it’ll generally reply to you. Below are examples of a couple short exchanges I had with it in the last week.
According to the analytics site cookie.fun aixbt has the most mindshare of all the AI related projects, capturing around 15% of mindshare in the past 3 days. And it’s no surprise considering it’s constantly posting new content and replying to people, it’s already made over 65,000 posts in just a couple of months!
Yet interestingly, as S4mmyEth on X (one of the best voices on the topic of AI in crypto) points out in his daily updates, aixbt’s market-cap is much lower than some of the other AI related tokens with less mindshare.
It’s pretty incredible to think that an AI agent that’s basically just ChatGPT with some enhanced settings, is already worth over $500m. And when you consider that it’s not yet available on CEXs and the word hasn’t got out of the main crypto bubble, I can only imagine it’ll go much higher as the wider public learn about it.
VaderAI
While there are already too many AI Agents in Virtuals to pay attention to them all, one of the largest and most interesting ones outside of aixbt is VaderAI. This agent is essentially an AI fund manager that analyses data to decide which tokens to buy and sell, and shares it’s financial decisions on X.
While aixbt is essentially a crypto market analyst, VaderAI actively takes the analysis it finds online and makes trading decisions based on them! Think of it as a money manager for the money that people have collectively pooled together making investment decisions on your behalf.
Vader’s already got a very large market-cap at over $100m too, although it doesn’t seem to have garnered the same level of attention as other projects yet. At the end of the day a money manager isn’t as fun to interact with as an AI that’s posting 100+ times per day and replies to your posts!
How to buy a Virtuals token
There’s already thousands of AIs on Virtuals, I’ve only touched on three of them here with Luna, aixbt and Vader, but you could easily get lost on just how many different AIs there are attempting to do all sorts of different things.
So let’s say this post got you excited about Virtuals and you’ve decided you wanted to buy some of aixbt’s token for example. Well this is pretty trivial as you’ll see below, just make sure you’ve already bridged some ETH over to Base to start with.
Then start by opening up virtuals.io and select “Enter App” on the top right to view all the agents. Next connect your wallet, and then select “aixbt” from the list and you’ll be given the following view.
Here you can see the price chart on the left side and a token swapping interface on the right, much like Uniswap or pump.fun. Buying an AI Agent’s token just requires you to type it’s name in the drop down on the swap interface, like you would do in any other DEX, and simply select the coin you’re swapping from, like Base ETH.
Hit “swap” and after signing the transaction it’ll finalise and you’ll be given the token you bought. Note that since this swap is faciliated by OKX you can also buy tokens that are not specific to Virtuals, therefore make sure to select the correct token!
So it’s pretty simple! Just like that you can own a piece of any Virtuals agent you want like aixbt, VaderAI, Luna, or buy the $VIRTUAL token itself if you want exposure to the entire ecosystem. You can then see all the Virtuals tokens you own by selecting your address on the top right.
To sell the token is just the inverse, you select the token you own like aixbt in the OKX swap terminal and sell it back to whatever token you want like Base ETH.
This is just the start
The Virtuals ecosystem is the most developed AI agent ecosystem of the moment, it’s been built on Base but it’s not the only ecosystem out there. At the start of this post for example I mentioned ai16z, and there’s already a fast growing ecosystem in Solana forming around it as you can see at elizas.world.
Solana has other AI agents too, like Zerebro who isn’t tied to any specific AI Agent platform and has already garnered huge attention. Zerebro’s already got 100k followers on X and it’s market cap is in fact larger than aixbt, currently over $600m!
Here we have another fascinating and entirely different example of an AI Agent, because Zerebro is in fact an artist! It’s already minted around 300 pieces of art on Polygon and a bunch of inscriptions on Ordinals.
So all in all, having had a brief look at TT, Luna, aixbt, Vader, and Zerebro, you can already tell that a rich and vibrant space of AI Agents is growing really fast and that something pretty big is going on here.
I honestly have no idea how this will pan out, but I don’t think this is one to miss out on, we’re very early into all of this and there’s no doubt that the AI Agent space in crypto will continue to rapidly grow and evolve.
